@Matt – Excellent points and additions to this vlog Matt. As I always emphasize, there’s not necessarily a RIGHT way to do it, and I go back and forth. I won’t pretend like following 3,000K is scalable, but I genuinely want to connect with those people (even as loose ties) b/c they provided me with value.

BUT, that said, sometimes I do want to just follow 200 or so, and then reach out to others via @replies, but not necessarily follow. Sometimes all the noise is overwhelming.

Also, don’t ever feel shy about posting your links here provided they’re relevant to the discussion. Here’s the post Matt’s referencing for those who are interested –> Changing My Twilosophy

@Susan – Twitter is a great tool that can be very useful, and who am I to judge how someone uses it? That said, personally I want to build genuine connections with people that will foster long-term relationships where both parties can benefit.

If I get a client because of my communications and value that I provide via Twitter, GREAT, but I’m not going to try and convince someone that having 100,000 followers (and getting them in an inauthentic way) is the route to go.

@Charlie – I was waiting for someone to call me out on that. I suspect it wouldn’t have happened by anyone but you, but I sent the video to one of my “real-life” friends on gchat and he called me out before the video was over.

It was my ex-girlfriend’s and some how got mixed up in my stuff when I moved out to NC. :-)

@Jackie – Eh. I guess my feeling is who is going to buy a landrover based on a Twitter background. There can’t be any live links to go other places for more information in a background.

I try to fall into the camp of, “With social media, you make your own rules,” and I don’t know how much they paid, but I don’t know that I see it as a worthwhile expense.

Your point about 3rd party apps is also a very valid one. There’s already services like Magpie where every nth tweet is an add and you earn money when people click on your links.

I hope Twitter doesn’t get over saturated with people looking for ways to “make money,” though I suspect it might.

@Nisha – The thing that bothers me most is that if all you’re doing is going for a ridiculous # of followers, haven’t you already lost the point?

Derek Halpern at Prevential got nearly 35K hits on a blog post from a link on Twitter when he only had 300 followers. Those followers were influencers that he had built relationships with, and their re-tweets had a very wide reach.
