It’s Okay to Be Selfish Sometimes
Here’s 25 things to think about over the holidays:
- It’s okay if you don’t read everything in your Google reader
- The world won’t end if you haven’t written a blog post in over a week
- The harder you work the luckier you get
- It’s okay to say no
- Visiting with your grandparents is a better use of time than participating in #u30pro #journchat #blogchat, etc.
- So is watching a movie with your little sister
- Be proactive about your career, dictate your own path
- Build your personal brand, but not based on what others want/think/expect
- Take a nap
- Drink a cold beer with good/old friends
- Call out nonsense
- Never sacrifice your integrity, especially for money
- Don’t take each other for granted
- Know the difference in management and leadership
- Backup your blog
- Redefine success
- Grad school and doctorate degrees are too expensive to “find yourself”
- Stop talking about yourself
- Skype with people that renew your vigor and get you excited
- Read books, fiction ones too
- Ignore all the rules
- Rock out to songs you liked 5, 10 years ago
- Set an example with your actions, not your words
- Say thank you
- Remember that it’s okay to be selfish sometimes

You too hombre. Enjoyed getting acquainted with your work this year!

Amen to backing up your blog. I also like the first one. I have no problem skipping over posts that I don’t really find pertinent to me.
Nice little list and Merry Christmas!

Truth: I doubt any of my blog is actually backed up… I figure if I lose it, it was meant to be gone. I bet people would rather read me wax poetic about sports and pop culture anyway.

Nothing wrong with the occasional “power nap” (or two)…

We’re “always on,” and so I see NO HARM in turning it off sometimes. This will continue to be a trend in 2010.

Number 5 is perfect. Family is always #1, but i think sometimes the computer screen gets in the way of family. Need to sometimes take a step back and spend time with people who will always be there. No matter what.

I spent WAY TOO MUCH TIME in front of a computer screen in 2009. I’ll probably always look back on it as “The Lost Year.” Now that I’m back in Texas and surrounded by friends and family again, you can bet I won’t take any of it for granted.

Nice advice Ryan. If you aren’t happy yourself, you cannot make others happy, or be productive.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Here’s to 2010!

Something I suspect we often take for granted Ryan. Often, I think we seek happiness vicariously through others, when in reality, most of the time we need to turn the lens on ourselves and determine what really matters to us.

Hey Ryan,
I think I came across your blog at Life without pants. I really like what you have to say here. It’s easy to get into the mind set of all work and no play in the world we live in today.

Well nice of you to stop by Srinivas! Matt’s a great guy, and I’m glad his content somehow steered you over here. My friends constantly remind me I’m not doing myself any favors working 12-14 hour days. I, as much as anyone, have to keep everything in perspective. For me, no amount of money or status will ever take precedence over my family and friends. Happy New Year to you!

I like the skype idea and I know just the person to start with
Would add: do one thing that you usually run away from
Cheers

Most of the time I opt for my comfort zone, but I’ll admit that typically when I’ve taken a chance, the results have been worth it. Good addition Anita!

Ryan, you’ll forgive my tardiness in letting you know I love this post, as I was practicing #1 – not reading everything in my Google reader for a few days! Thanks for the light-hearted but oh-so-true advice.
