Woody Hayes: "I've had smarter people around me all my life, but I haven't run into one yet that can outwork me. And if they can't outwork you, then smarts aren't going to do them much good. That's just the way it is. And if you believe that and live by it, you'd be surprised at how much fun you
can have."

Ryan,

Great post. I'd add that I think authenticity is key. If you reach out to people you admire, and it's clear to them that you're only doing so out of self-interest, you probably won't get very far. If you show a consistent desire to help others, connect people that you know (with no obvious benefit to yourself), and show a care/concern/interest in the success and happiness of others, you'll be rewarded with people that want to help you back.

The trick is, I don't think you can learn a lesson like that in an MBA classroom. Surrounding yourself with successful people is one thing, but surrounding yourself with successful people that you care about you as a person and as a professional (and who reciprocate that feeling) is another.

Crazy.</a> =-.
